Housing Co-op Development
NCF provides co-op development and support services to affordable housing co-ops. Over our twenty-year history, we have worked to create an ecosystem that supports housing co-ops through organizing and educating stakeholders about the benefits of the model and by advocating for the creation of financial and operational tools that housing co-ops need to succeed.
To date, NCF’s housing work has focused on the conversion of manufactured (mobile) home communities (MHCs) to co-ops through our Midwest Resident-Owned Communities (ROC) program, which has preserved sixteen MHCs and 1,151 affordable homes in communities valued at $41.5 million. NCF is a founding nonprofit affiliate of the ROC USA Network, an organization created in 2008 to scale the “ROC” model across the country.
In partnership with organizations across the country, NCF has developed robust models for creating and sustaining new affordable housing co-ops. As the Midwest ROC program grows, our co-op conversion work is evolving to support residents of other types of affordable housing, including multifamily apartment buildings.
